With spring around the corner, many of us will be gearing up to do a deep clean of our homes, so why should our cars be any different? Many people underestimate the importance of a good spring clean for their cars, so if you're looking for some tips on how to do it, read on to find out more.

Why should I clean my car?

Cleaning your car might seem like a chore, but the benefits it brings you are endless. Just some of the positive aspects you can gain from giving your vehicle a good scrub include:

If you drive around in a dirty car for long enough, you are likely to start experiencing difficulties with your health. Not only will you be breathing in dirt and dust particles on a daily basis, but this can cause irritation to your respiratory system over an extended period of time, causing you to cough. You may even start to experience skin disorders and nausea. Similarly, your mental health could also decline if you are constantly surrounded by filth. You should make sure that all litter is removed and any dirt, mud and crumbs are swept up regularly to keep your car free of bugs and germs.

If you regularly give other people lifts, a dirty car can make it seem like you don't have good hygiene habits and imply that you don't take pride in your belongings. How do I clean my car?

Ready to spring clean your car and make it a healthy space? Here are some car cleaning tips to help you:

Inside

• For the main console of your car, use a micro-fibre cloth to wipe away any dust that has accumulated on the surfaces. Make sure you wipe down any of the main touchpoints too with some cleaning spray and a cloth, including the steering wheel, the sun visor, the gearstick, any buttons on your dash, your touchscreen (if you have one) and all cup holders. 

• Use a hoover on the upholstery, carpets, footwells and boot space. If you have any mats inside your vehicle, take these out of your car and shake them to get rid of any accumulated dirt and debris.

• If the inside of your windows is looking dirty or streaky, spray some glass cleaner onto a microfibre cloth and wipe them down.

Outside

• When cleaning the main body of your car, start by dousing it in some warm water. Next, apply the soap with a sponge (make sure the brand of soap you use is car friendly) and gently rub off any stubborn dirt. Finally, rinse the car down thoroughly with water to avoid any streaks. 

• Check your windscreen wipers for signs of wear and tear. If they look OK, you can wipe them down with a cloth to remove any moisture buildup and prevent the formation of mould. If they are damaged, it's best to replace them.
