Volvo XC40 Named 2018 European Car of the Year

The New Volvo XC40 has won the title of European Car of the Year, which is the first time the prestigious award has been claimed by the brand. The compact SUV was chosen by a panel of 59 judges across Europe as the clear winner, followed by the Seat Ibiza and the BMW 5 Series.
Beginning in 1964, the European Car of the Year awards assesses vehicles which have projected sales of at least 5,000 units and are available in Europe. Aside from these criteria, the winner could be any type of car, from any market category. The European Car of the Year award has become one of the most influential titles in the world.
Since being unveiled in September 2017, the XC40 has received exceptionally positive reviews and has also been awarded the title of the What Car? Car of the Year 2018.
One of the Swedish manufacturer’s three internationally-available SUVs, the Volvo XC40 is acclaimed for its attractive design, excellent handling and unrivalled safety technology. It is also Volvo’s first vehicle to have a car-sharing feature, allowing drivers to share it without needing to exchange a physical key.
President and CEO of Volvo Cars, Håkan Samuelsson, was delighted with the result, saying that it was ‘timed perfectly’.
He announced: ‘The XC40 will be a strong contributor to further growth, taking us into a new and fast-growing small SUV segment,’ adding ‘We have a clear strategy for growth and we are committed to leading in automotive safety, connectivity services and electrification.
‘The XC40 reflects that commitment, and looking at the response from our customers and from the Car of the Year jury here today, we are on the right track.
The award-winning car has a starting price of around £28,000 and more than 20,000 units have been ordered across Europe and the US already.
