Why Spring Is The Perfect Time To Change Your Air Filter

Why spring is the perfect time to change your air filter

Spring is drawing nearer, and as the air gets warmer, so will the inside of your vehicle, meaning you'll soon be turning the A/C on. As such, it's a good idea to make sure that your air filter is working as it should be. Below, we will discuss why this is important and how you can change your air filter easily.

When to change a car air filter

Your air filter does exactly what it says on the tin: it regulates the cleanliness of the air that is pumped into your vehicle through the A/C vents. Any impurities from the atmosphere, such as dust, pollen and pollution, will be caught by this filter before they enter the interior of your car. This then stops airborne particles from irritating your lungs, preventing respiratory problems.

What's more, if your air filters are dirty, then this will reduce the efficiency of your A/C system as it will be forced to work harder. In turn, this burns more fuel and impacts the performance of your vehicle.

What are the signs your air filter needs changing?

- There's black smoke coming from your exhaust pipe

- Your A/C units are emitting a foul odour

- You're burning through fuel quicker

- You're experiencing a lack of vehicle acceleration

- Your A/C vents are visibly dirty

How do I change my air filter?

The great part about air filters is that they are easy to replace. With a bit of know-how, you can quickly change one yourself! Here's our step-by-step guide to changing a car air filter:

- First, locate the air filter, which is usually behind the glove box.

Then, release the catches gently from each side of the filter.

Next, slide the filter out of its compartment.

- Now, remove the filter element and replace it with the new one. Follow the direction markings when inserting it.

Put the filter back into its compartment and secure the catches back in place.

How often should an air filter be changed?

Each manufacturer will have their own guidelines, so check your owner's manual. However, most will recommend the air filter be changed every 15,000 to 30,000 miles. Of course, you may need to change the filter more regularly than this if you live or drive in an area that has high levels of pollen, dust or airborne debris.
