With petrol and diesel cars having to be phased out by 2030, hybrid cars are the next step towards the electric car revolution. They offer a perfect middle ground; combining electric power with standard fuel, helping to achieve more eco friendly motoring. Hybrids are now becoming more readily available in all kinds of trims and styles, from hatchbacks to family cars but with so many on the market, it can be difficult to find the best one for you. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of the top 5 affordable hybrid cars, so you can get a great car for less, while still helping the planet.
1) Toyota Yaris - from approximately £17,000
Toyota have continued with their reputation for reliability with the release of the Toyota Yaris hybrid.
In the standard model, the only engine size available is a 1.5L with self charging petrol-electric hybrid technology. Toyota themselves have stated the Yaris hybrid can be driven approximately 80% of the time in just electric mode, with the petrol engine switching on when the car reaches speeds of up to 80mph.
The base model alone has some incredible features that come as standard too including 16 inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights and wipers, adaptive cruise control, air conditioning, a reversing camera and a multifunction leather trimmed steering wheel.
2) Honda Jazz - from approximately £12,000
The Honda Jazz hybrid model is very similar to the Toyota Yaris hybrid in that it also features a 1.5L engine with a self charging system.
One of its biggest selling points is the spacious interior, thanks to their Magic Seat design. With the rear seats up, luggage capacity starts at 298L but with rear seats down, jumps to an impressive 1205L.
According to Honda, the self charging Jazz can also deliver up to 864km* on a full tank and achieves CO2 emissions of just 79-141 (g/km).
3) Hyundai Ioniq - from approximately £18,000
The Hyundai Ioniq is available both in a self charging hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, the self charging being the cheaper of the two. This car isn’t necessarily about style but focuses more on efficiency, giving owners an estimated mpg rating of 62.8 and low CO2 emissions of 102g/km.
It’s also large and spacious enough to fit four adults comfortably. So if you’re in the market for a discreet looking eco-friendly car, the Hyundai Ioniq could be a good option.
4) Kia Niro - from approximately £25,000
If you have your heart set on SUV styling the Kia Niro is available as both a plug-in hybrid and self charging hybrid. The Niro sits between the Hyundai Stonic and Sportage in sizing, and has a practical 472L boot.
The car comes with a 1.6L petrol engine and electric motors, to give you a modest 55mpg and the fuel economy and emissions figures are at a nice low 110g/km.
5) Renault Captur E Tech - from approximately £31,000
The Renault Captur is available in both hybrid and plug in hybrid versions. The engine in the hybrid is taken from the already successful Clio’s - a 1.6L engine combined with two electric motors. The plug in hybrid version uses the same engine but with a bigger battery that allows you to drive on just electric power more often.
Renault have said you can drive up to 30 miles on pure electric power only making this car perfect for everything from economical school runs, to supermarket trips and work commutes.
