What are motability cars?
Motability cars are designed for disabled people to help with their independence and freedom. Under the Motability Scheme, people with disabilities are able to exchange their monthly disability allowance to lease a car.
You’re able to get a new car every three years and the majority of your costs are covered too.

What do I need to be eligible?
You need to be receiving one of the following motability payments to be eligible for a motability vehicle:
1) Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (HMRC DLA) - this is currently £62.25 per week
2) Enhanced Rate of Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP) - this is currently £62.25 per week
3) War Pensioner's Mobility Supplement (WPMS) - this is currently £64.80 per week
4) Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP) - this is currently £139.75 per week
You can read more in depth about how you qualify for each of these payments on the Motability website.
What cars are available on the motability scheme?
Leading car brands who are part of the motability scheme include Citroen, Dacia, Ford, Renault and Hyundai.
There are various models available, from small city cars, to family SUV’s and electric cars.
Some of the best cars available on the scheme include the Skoda Citigo, Hyundai i10 and i20.
Benefits of the motability scheme:
As mentioned before, the majority of your vehicle costs are covered when on the motability scheme. This includes your vehicle's insurance, servicing and maintenance, breakdown cover, and sometimes even annual car tax.
When buying your vehicle, it can be fitted with any necessary adaptations you need such as certain driving controls. You can also have up to two additional named drivers on the car too.

Considerations:
There is a mileage limit of 60,000 miles in place during the three year lease period on your motability car. If your car exceeds this mileage limit, you have to pay an additional 5p for every extra mile you drive.
Furthermore, while the majority of the car's costs will be covered, you will be responsible for aspects such as fuel and maintenance products including oil and screenwash.
Any extra adaptations that don’t come as standard under the scheme that you’d like to be fitted also need to be paid for by you.
As usual, things such as insurance claims and speeding fines also have to be paid by you.
